NEWT-level study

Fifth-year students: one of your fellows asked me today about NEWT-level study in the Arts, and I realised I had not spoken to you all about my expectations.
Any student who earns a grade of E or higher on the OWL may continue in my classes at NEWT level without question. Students who receive a lower grade on the OWL, but wish to continue anyway: I would be happy to discuss the matter with you. I will be particularly lenient with those who only began their study of the Arts this year, but anyone who has a talent for the subject and merely tests poorly may make his case to me for inclusion.
Anyone with last-minute questions, meanwhile, may find me in my office all day tomorrow, save for class between 1 and 2PM and 4 and 5PM.
I will also be hosting a post-exam postmortem (and celebration) for my NEWT students, and any other seventh-year students who wish to accompany them, on Sunday after supper in my classroom. You have worked diligently and well during a trying year to prepare for exams; it is nearly time to celebrate their completion!

Private Message to Minerva
Date: 2013-05-16 09:09 pm (UTC)I am so ridiculously proud of the little darlings, even if I've only vague hints as to which were involved.
Private Message to Lana and Ned Pennifold
Date: 2013-05-16 09:19 pm (UTC)Once this term has ended, we must find a mutually agreeable time to sit down together and get to know each other more closely, but until that time, know that if there is any way in which I might ease your transition into Our Lord's most faithful, you have only to say the word.
Your brother in service,
Antosha

Date: 2013-05-17 05:06 pm (UTC)We were surprised how suddenly Our Lord called us for the ceremony. We'd been told to expect rather a long period of consideration, but then really there was none of that.
I do wonder whether others will feel we were adequately... prepared? (I'm not sure sure that conveys quite what I mean.) Introduced.
You must let us have you to supper when you've returned from Hogwarts. When you've had a chance to settle in.
Yours in His service,
Lana
Re: Private Message to Lana and Ned Pennifold
Date: 2013-05-17 05:44 pm (UTC)My dear, Our Lord has ever been an adept assessor of talent. If He has decided you are to serve Him, it is not for us to disagree. You are not the first to have been brought to service so young; Our Lord has found over the years that a mix of youthful vigour and mature wisdom prevents His council from growing too imbalanced in one direction or the other.
That having been said, approaching your new stature with a certain level of ... humility ... may prevent you from finding too late that you have made some irrevocable enemies among our company. Our brotherhood is, alas, occasionally beset by the politics one inevitably finds when one lets Slytherins gather, no matter what our ideals might be.
My advice to you would be to step lightly, behave impeccably, make neither irrevocable commitments nor alliances among those who will no doubt attempt to woo you to their ways of thinking, observe everything around you carefully, and turn your talents towards serving Our Lord's will and wisdom. Having had the pleasure of working with you last year, I am confident you will mature into one of His great lights, and though I have not had the pleasure of meeting Ned, I am certain he is the same. Though the transition may be rocky in places, I am confident you will weather the shoals with grace.
I would be most pleased to join you for supper once term has ended. And, as I believe I recall you are a Ravenclaw, and thus likely to be tempted, I will return the courtsey with an offer for you to make arrangements to come and tour my library with me.
Yours, in service,
Antosha
